It appears that 20th Century Fox have found themselves a supervillain for its upcoming reboot of Marvel’s heroic team-up The Fantastic Four.
British actor Toby Kebbell will play Victor von Doom, aka Doctor Doom, the genius inventor/sorcerer who became the quartet’s archnemesis. First introduced to the comic series in 1962, he was previously played on screen by Julian McMahon in Fox’s past outings Fantastic Four (2005) and its follow-up Rise Of The Silver Surfer (2007).
This will be the first major Hollywood role for the 31-year-old Kebbell, after small parts in the likes of Disney’s Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and this year’s Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.
According to Variety, fellow rising stars Jack Huston and Domhnall Gleeson were also in the running for the role of Doom.
Fox have been on a casting frenzy as of late, with Miles Tiller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell recently cast as Reed Richards (aka Mr. Fantastic), Sue Storm (aka Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (aka Human Torch) and Ben Grimm (aka The Thing) respectively. With the addition of Kebbell, it seems the studio are leaning towards a younger cast for its second iteration of the franchise.
The film will be directed by Josh Trank, who brought us 2012’s unexpected superpowered hit Chronicle.
The Fantastic Four is due for release in UK cinemas on June 18, 2015.
