Amy Adams to Star in Sci-Fi ‘Story of Your Life’

amy-2Following appearances in two Academy Award contending films – American Hustle (for which she was nominated as best actress) and HerAmy Adams is in negotiations to star in a science fiction thriller Story of Your Life for the director Denis Villeneuve, who is best known for the foreign drama Incendies and last year’s Prisoners (another film, Enemy, is currently in limited release in the US and soon in the UK.

The premise, based on a short story by science fiction author Ted Chiang, is about a expert linguist who is sent by the military to an alien craft that has landed to try and decipher what the language is and if the aliens come in peace or mean for human-kind’s destruction.  Meanwhile as the linguist (to be played by Adams) digs deeper into the alien’s language receives vivid flashbacks of how they came to this planet and what their arrival really means.

This would mark as a departure for Villeneuve, despite his latest Enemy having a fairly trippy concept (two Jake Gyllehnaal’s, enough said), and Adams, who mostly appears in dramas with some exceptions (i.e. Man of Steel last year, and arguably Her).  The script also comes from someone who is more used to straight-forward Hollywood genre pics, such as the remakes of Nightmare on Elm Street and The Thing from 2011 and Final Destination 5.  Perhaps though the material from Chiang marks as a departure for him as well.

No other casting has been announced at this time; FilmNation Entertainment will be producing the film.  No studio is announced at the time of the Deadline article’s pressing either.
