Mrs. Doubtfire 2 Is On, But Without Mara Wilson
Since the news that 1993s Mrs. Doubtfire finally has a sequel on the way, the question of casting has been on everyone’s mind.
Currently, Robin Williams is the only cast member confirmed to reprise his role as the divorced father of three who disguises himself as a Scottish nanny, Euphegenia Doubtfire, in order to be close to his children.
Christopher Columbus, who directed the first film, is also on board to direct the sequel, with 20th Century Fox returning to distribute the film.
The idea for a sequel has been in the works since the early 2000s, but script problems had stopped the film from going into production. However, David Berenbaum, who previously penned the script to Elf, is now reportedly on board to write the sequel.
Apart from Robin Williams, it hasn’t been confirmed whether cast members Sally Field or Pierce Brosnan will reprise their roles, or whether the two eldest Hillard children, Lisa Jakub and Matthew Lawrence, will reprise their roles.
Mara Wilson, who played the youngest child Natalie Hillard in the film, has said via that she has not been asked to appear in the sequel, and has no wish to have anything to do with it.
As with Lisa Jakub, who plays her older sister in the film, Mara Wilson has retired from acting and now works as a writer via her website, Mara Wilson Writes Stuff.
Although Wilson has defiantly ruled out a return, Jakub has said via her website that she hasn’t been approached about the sequel yet, and is keeping an open mind about it if she is asked. If Jakub does return for the sequel, this will be her first film role since 2000.
With the news that the sequel is happening and Robin Williams is on board, we will have to patiently wait for more cast announcements and the sequel plotline to be announced.
