We may have lost Batman vs. Superman from the 2015 lineup – with its estimated release now set for Spring 2016 – but just in case you were worried that next year’s calendar wasn’t already filled to the brim with potential box-office busters in the making (Star Wars 7, Avengers 2, James Bond whatever), you can now add the Wachowskis latest epic Jupiter Ascending to the list.
The space opera, which stars Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum (check out their character posters above), was originally due for release this summer on July 18, but has now been pushed back to February 6 2015 by studio Warner Bros. The reason? To make room for extensive post-production tinkering, which involves over 2,000 special effects shots.
According to US distribution chief at Warner Bros. Dan Fellman, “they were just not going to make it on time” for this year’s international release, “since the foreign territories need additional time” for marketing and such.
Had it opened this year, it would have released the day after 20th Century Fox’s simian sequel Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (in international territories). Now, although it may be dodging Disney and co.’s heavy-hitters in the summer, its new 2015 cinema launch has it showing up against Johnny Depp comedy Mortdecai and Universal’s fantasy adventure The Seventh Son, the latter having already been delayed numerous times as well.
Jupiter Ascending sees The Matrix siblings Andy and Lana return to their sci-fi origins, following their all-encompassing literary adaptation Cloud Atlas last year. Hot young things Kunis and Tatum take on the roles of a prophesied Earthling and her E.T. bodyguard (and inevitable love-interest), as they flee the clutches of the tyrannical Baron Abrasax (Eddie Redmayne).
