Yes you did just read that title right, Sega legend ‘Sonic the Hedgehog‘ is set to star in his very own movie – following in a long line of video game protagonists who made the move from console to big screen.
Admittedly this is a risky move as the path hasn’t always been kind to those who have jumped platforms – Lara Croft’s Tomb Raider may have achieved cult status, but more perhaps through the popularity of Angelina Jolie‘s skimpy costume than any form of merit earned through the film’s almost non-existent plot.
On the other hand the much more recent success found by The Lego Movie might offer fans a little more hope on the matter.
Working in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation, American producer Neal H. Moritz will be taking charge of the project under the banner of his own production company Original Film (who brought you Cruel Intentions, Click and 21 Jump Street among others).
He announced his plans for the “live-action hybrid” at the 35th Annecy International Animation Film Festival yesterday. The project, which so far does not have a release date, will follow a script written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux and will be executive produced by Toby Ascher. Hannah Minghella and Andrea Giannetti are also onboard to oversee the project on behalf of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
I have to admit, despite the murky history of the game to screen leap, the prospect of seeing Sonic and Doctor Eggman’s adventures come to life is a rather exciting one. And maybe this film will manage to convince some Sonic veterans to dig out their old Gameboys and reconnect with this childhood favourite. After all, you’re never too old for Sonic the Hedgehog right?
