A sequel to Harmony Korine‘s divisive teen trash flick Spring Breakers is in the works, announced by production outfit Wild Bunch as part of its Cannes 2014 slate.
The pop-coloured crime drama saw former Disney alumni Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez and Ashley Benson let loose as college friends on the search for an intoxication fuelled release in the build-up to America’s treasured ‘Spring Break’ party event, with James Franco also tagging along as sleazy drug dealer Alien.
This follow-up, subtitled The Second Coming, won’t see any of the main cast return, instead following a new group of young ladies coming into conflict with extreme militant Christians hoping to convert them from their ‘wicked’ ways.
Korine is also out, but Irvine Welsh (pictured above), celebrated Scottish author of similarly un-PC works Trainspotting and Filth, will write the screenplay. On directing duties is Swedish filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund, whose previous credits include drug comedy Spun (2002) and last year’s Matt Lucas-starrer Small Apartments.
Production will be handled by Wild Bunch and the Los Angeles-based Muse Productions (who worked on the first film and own the rights to the concept), as well as French distribution company Mars Films.
Despite mixed reviews from the critics, many of whom derided the film for its style-over-substance approach, the original has garnered a cult following since its release last year. Fans will surely be pleased about this upcoming sequel; for the critics (and everyone else), that remains to be seen.
