Right on the heels of the Godzilla reboot being the #1 movie in the world and raking in over 200 million in less than week, director of the film Gareth Edwards has nabbed his next gig, and it’s a biggie – the first spin-off feature film for Star Wars. Gary Whitta (After Earth, The Book of Eli) has been tapped to write the script, this according to Badass Digest.
Though Edwards is already tapped to direct Godzilla sequels – specifically 2 and 3 – there aren’t any script details yet for either film (the end of Godzilla, without spoiling anything, leaves open room for potential sequels).
Disney and Lucasfilm is looking to get things rolling with the SW universe, and while Edwards won’t be directing a film in the official “Episode” cannon (of course episode 7 will need to get done before more episodes can be discussed) it will involve a much-beloved character. It could be possible that Disney will buy out any contracts so that Edwards is free to direct for them.
Some in the blogosphere are already speculating it may be Boba Fett, the much beloved if underdeveloped bounty hunter whose back-story is shrouded in secrecy (outside of the smidgen of development via Jengo Fett in Attack of the Clones). There’s no official word yet but it should come quite soon – Disney is looking to do spinoffs of many of their beloved characters, in particular Fett and Han Solo.
Edwards has proven himself, at the least, adept at controlling and making intense special effects with his debut lo-fi feature Monsters and the recent Godzilla which had some spectacular fighting between the big green one and the Mutos (his background was also in special effects before becoming a director).
