The surprises keep coming – at the end of the panel for Legendary Pictures, a trailer was unleashed on an unsuspecting audience (people thinking perhaps, since Guillermo del Toro was on stage, it was his long gestating At the Mountains of Madness perhaps), and it turns out a prequel to King Kong, Skull Island, is in production and due for a 2016 release!
For those who have seen Peter Jackson’s remake of the 1933 classic (or, of course, the original), a large portion of the picture takes place on the island the 8th Wonder of the World – as well as dinosaurs and giant spiders and creatures of very dangerous types and stripes – and while Legendary didn’t give any talk about the movie beforehand, it looks from the talk about the trailer that the idea will be to explore even more on the island and what dangerous things lurk there.
The site Slashfilm had this description of what was shown (no video, at least anything legal, was recorded): “The clip started showing a rain storm pouring down over big waves in the ocean. Audio narration included lines from the Heart of Darkness: “Going up that river was like traveling back to the beginning of the world, when the plants ran wild and the trees were kings.” Shots of an island, lush jungle, monkeys and creatures … “Being alone in the wilderness, it had looked within itself, and by heavens! I tell you, it had gone mad. We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness.” We see a cave on the island shaped like a skull. Reveal of the logo Legendary’s “Skull Island”
No announcements were made on any specifics, like director, actors, et al, and as with past big Comic Con announcements that’s just how it goes (this time last year a logo for Batman v Superman was shown and that was all needed to get people into hysterics). But Legendary Pictures’ press release had this to say: “Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.”
The film already has a release date set for November 4th, 2016. One may also speculate as to future plans for Kong – Legendary is also putting together another Godzilla movie (with a whole host of recognizable characters from past cannon), but at the same time, now that they’re in the franchises for both… Could this happen again?
