As you will know following our social channels, we are reporting from San Diego Comic Con this week; and today being Saturday, we are amidst the biggest day of the convention so far. All of the action has been happening in Hall H this morning, with Warner Bros kicking off the huge day for film presentations.

Warner Bros did not disappoint in their two hour panel, debuting brand new footage from ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies’ this morning. Most of the principal cast of the movie, Peter Jackson, Benedict Cumberbatch (Smaug and The Necromancer), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), producer Philippa Boyens, Lee Pace (Thranduil), Elijah Wood (Frodo), Evangline Lilly (Tauriel), Andy Serkis (Gollum), Luke Evans (Bard the Bowman), and Graham McTavish (Dwalin).

The teaser trailer length footage showed a war-stricken Middle-Earth, giving a great teaser of the action-packed movie we can expect to see this winter.

The footage, almost masterful and epic in scale, had a sad tone. Perhaps this was largely due to the background music playing throughout the trailer, ‘Edge of Night,’ which is the song that Pippin sings in ‘The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.’ Many fans in the panel were very emotional whilst watching the premiere of the teaser.

Director, Jackson, promised that not all characters represented onstage would survive the duration of the movie. “There’s a lot of sadness and tragedy. It’s always good when you can kill off some main characters, as a filmmaker. It’s a chance to do something ugly, powerful and emotional.”

On a far lighter note, Jackson did mention plans to extend the extended versions of ‘Lord of the Rings’. Middle-Earth may see the light of day once more.

At the end of the teaser, Gandalf implored, “Will you follow me one last time?”. A fitting quote to give a bittersweet tone to (presumably) the last ever Comic Con presentation of a Tolkien adaptation.

The film is released 17th December, 2014.
