“I thought I’d see what the fuss was about,” said director Christopher Nolan, who, along with the star of his upcoming sci-fi epic Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey, surprised fans in the sacred Hall H at Comic Con yesterday.
The two arrived at the tail-end of the Paramount panel, and Nolan screened a never-before-seen trailer for the movie, which won’t be due for weeks. This was Nolan’s first appearance and got rapturous applause from the crowd (McConaughey, too, got his fair share).
The movie has an air of secrecy about it – I, for example, know it’s about how astronauts use worm hole to travel through space (the trailer that’s currently online and screening in theaters also suggests it’s about finding a way to give human beings a new home) – but Nolan still talked about some of the influences. Nolan said he grew up in a time “where being an astronaut was the highest ambition. And the idea that we could keep exploring further and further. I felt that has fallen off greatly over the last few decades.”
He also kept up the secrecy about the “innovative techniques” being used on the film. “I’m not going to tell you what they are because I wanted you to see the film,” he said coyly. Interestingly, the film is being co-distributed by Warner brothers, who just last year had their own innovative space film, Gravity.
McConaughey took the stage first and didn’t tell Nolan was waiting until the last moment. Of the film, the commitment didn’t take long. “I read it, I liked it quite a lot. And I was in,” he said. And about Nolan’s filmmaking, “We moved fast. Two, three takes and we moved on. It felt very much like a big independent film,” he explained, also adding that the project was “by far the most ambitious film Mr. Nolan has directed.”
Also appearing at the Paramount panel were Dwayne Johnson and Megan Fox for Hercules and Ninja Turtles movies, respectively, coming out this and next weekends.
Interstellar is due for release November 7th. Film also stars Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck and Jessica Chastain.
