Oh what a tangled web studios weave when they practice to… make a super-hero movie that is just too good (or should we say surreal) to be true. Such was the case in the mid 1990’s when mega-producer Jon Peters (who helped bring Batman to the screen in 1989) decided to resurrect the Man of Steel a decade before Bryan Singer got the job with a film called ‘Superman Lives.’
In short, it didn’t happen, but before it didn’t get to shooting a whole team got involved, including director Tim Burton and Kevin Smith on the screenplay (you can see , which I’m sure sparked interest in this story in the first place), and, most curious and bizarre of all, Nicolas Cage cast as Kal El from planet Krypton.
And now, as luck would have it, a documentary is coming out about the making of the ill-fated project, directed by Jon Schnepp, and a full-length trailer has hit online. Also featured are comic-book writer Grant Morrison and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura among others.
Excited? This is the sort of superhero flick that will likely get a bit over-shadowed as Batman v Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Avengers 2 news swarms over the internet from Comic-Con, but is all the same out there and, hopefully, building a buzz (another movie like this, Jodorowsky’s Dune, came out earlier this year and also about a doomed project full of creativity behind the scenes).
According to IMDb, the movie is due for release August 1st.
