Sofia Coppola To Direct ‘The Little Mermaid’

Disney’s 1989 version of ‘The Little Mermaid’

Sofia Coppola is currently negotiating to direct a live-action adaptation of the The Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid, written by Hans Christian Anderson in 1837 about a mermaid who falls in love with a human prince has been adapted before, most famously by Disney in 1989.

This live-action version is set to be produced by Universal Pictures and Working Title. Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson is set to write the script.

Versions of The Little Mermaid have been in production previously, with scripts produced by Kelly Marcel, who has recently penned Fifty Shades of Grey and Saving Mr. Banks, and another version written by Abi Morgan, who has previously written Shame and The Iron Lady.

A few years ago, a version of one of these scripts was set to be directed by Joe Wright, of Atonement and Pride & Prejudice fame, but production never got off the ground.

Wright is currently set to direct a live-action version of Peter Pan, another film made famous by Disney in 1953.

Sofia Coppola has previously directed Lost in Translation, and more recently The Bling Ring with Emma Watson. It has recently been rumoured that Emma Watson will also star in The Little Mermaid.

No cast information or a release date has been announced.
