Despite the recent hype and praise following special 17-minute long (!) preview screenings of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the Disney-Marvel film will not, alas, be having any special screenings in full at the San Diego Comic Con. This was confirmed by Gun himself on his Facebook page, and has since been shared on various sites (including fansided.com).
From Gunn (and the Monday noted is a couple of days ago):
“To answer questions I’m being asked a lot, and to be clear: We are only screening 17 minutes of on Monday at the sneak peek in IMAX theaters, not the entire film. We are not going to suddenly surprise people who show up and show them the whole movie, in part because the movie isn’t completely finished, and in part because we don’t want people who made other plans to be leaving the theater after 17 minutes. So feel free to make other plans.
Also: Yes, the 17 minutes shown Monday is different from the footage showing at Disney theme parks.
And finally, no, I am sorry we are not planning on showing the film at San Diego Comicon. Really.
You can see the whole movie August 1 (or whenever it opens in your country). There are no other planned screenings before that time, other than the various premieres.”
Although anything can potentially happen at Comic Con – this is, after all, where Zach Snyder unleashed the first Batman/Superman symbol a month after Man of Steel was released and solidifying the plans for a team up – it would be unlikely that Marvel/Disney would want to further go into any more spoilers (perhaps fears of any potential piracy, which at a Comic Con might be more difficult to control, is a concern).
The good news for those looking for this to be the next big summer blockbuster is that the anticipation is building further. You can read a flurry of fan reaction here, but in short, as someone on Twitter put it: “Just saw about 20 minutes of #guardiansofthegalaxy and I’m legitimately blown away. It’s gonna be Star Wars good.” The movie releases August 1st in most parts of the world, and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, John C. Reilly, and Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper in voice roles.
