It is one of the most hotly anticipated events of the year for any cinephile, and now the excitement is palpable as the official selection for this year’s Cannes Film Festival was announced yesterday.
In this year’s Competition line-up, seasoned directors are hoping to bring their A-game to the decorated Croisette, including Jean-Luc Godard, the Breathless man who is popularly credited as being one of the founding advocates of France’s New Wave of cinema in the 1960s. His entry this year will be Goodbye To Language, his first foray into 3D filmmaking. The French-Swiss director famously didn’t show for his last planned appearance at the festival in 2010 (for the screening of film socialisme).
Also in the running for the Palme d’Or is David Cronenberg with his Robert Pattinson starrer Maps To The Stars; Olivier Assayas‘ international drama Clouds Of Sils Maria; Tommy Lee Jones‘ second outing as director with period Western The Homesman; and The Search from Michel Hazanavicius, who won top honours in 2011 for silent-comedy The Artist.
Grace Of Monaco, a biopic of actress Grace Kelly starring Nicole Kidman, was previously announced to open the festival. Similarly playing out of competition will be Coming Home, the latest effort from China’s Zhang Yimou, and DreamWorks‘ How To Train Your Dragon 2, the sequel to their 2010 animated hit.
In the Un Certain Regard category, Drive actor Ryan Gosling will be debuting his first feature as writer-director. Fantasy-drama Lost River, previously titled How To Catch A Monster, stars Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes and former Doctor Who Matt Smith.
The 67th Cannes Film Festival will run from the 14-25 May. Check out the full line-up here.
