In Cinemas This Week 2504

It may have earned itself a staggering (in the bad sense) 18% on review-accumulation site Rotten Tomatoes since its US premiere, but don’t let that be the whole story. Sci-fi thriller Transcendence still has a good amount of intrigue behind the shroud of negativity. Not only does it see multiplex favourite Johnny Depp in his (arguably) least commercial role since The Rum Diary, but it’s also the directing debut for Wally Pfister, regular cinematographer for Christopher Nolan who won himself an Academy Award for his work on Inception. Depp stars as ambitious scientist Dr. Will Caster, who in his work to create a fully sentient machine risks losing himself completely. Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany and Morgan Freeman co-star.

Alice In Wonderland‘s Mia Wasikowska returns to her native Australia for Tracks, a biographical adventure based on the true-life story of young Robyn Davidson, who travelled 2,700 kilometres across the Outback to reach the Indian Ocean. Accompanying her are four camels, her faithful dog and Rick Smolan (played by Girls’ Adam Driver), a National Geographic photographer who documents her journey.

The Other Woman is the latest romance from The Notebook‘s Nick Cassavetes, with a little added spice. Cameron Diaz, who previously took the lead for Cassavetes in My Sister’s Keeper, stars as Carly Whitten, a headstrong woman who discovers that her new boyfriend (Game Of ThronesNikolaj Coster-Waldau) is not only married, but also has another lady friend on the side. Leslie Mann and Kate Upton make up the comedy cast.
