‘Betty Boop’ Movie Coming Soon From Simon Cowell

Did you ever think a Betty Boop movie (or, possibly, a franchise) would come to current day, 21st century wide-release in theaters?  And more than that, the person who would bring this forward to the world is… Simon Cowell?  Of American Idol, Britain’s Got Talent, all those talent shows (and From Justin to Kelly, less said about that the better.

He won’t be the only producer on the project – according to Variety, which broke the news last week along with Cowell’s own Twitter (which you can see bwlow), proucers are Zareh Nalbandian and Jason Lust from Animal Logic and Cowell and Adam Milano from Syco.  A director is still being looked into along with a script – Syco and Animal Logic are actually the animation studios that did work on the mega-hit The LEGO Movie earlier this year.

A film has been in the world for several months, just with no producers attached; since the 1930’s when the original Betty Boop cartoons were in theaters, the character has been owned and created by Fleisher studios (they also did some amazing Superman shorts back in the early 1940’s).  She’s a big-haired, big-eyed, little-liped one-of-a-kind creation that has a signature line, “Boop-oop-a-doop!”, and was the first female cartoon hero back in the early era of cartoons (I mean black and white).

The project will likely go to Sony, as that is where Cowell has a first-look deal.  The last time Betty Boop was seen was in a theater was 26 years ago with Who Framed Roger Rabbit.   Cowell said in a statement, “Betty is an icon, and one of the biggest stars in the world – I’m thrilled to be working with her.  Betty, I’ve worked with some serious divas but I think you could be the biggest of them all!”

Here, also, is a cartoon from the “old-school” Betty Boop times, featuring Cab Calloway!
